Kate's Story: Offering Sanity Through Support for Foster Families
Kate and her husband have four biological children, but they felt their family was incomplete.
They were drawn to fostering because they wanted to open their home and be a loving family to children in need, while also showing their own kids they could make a difference.
About eight months into their fostering journey, they discovered Foster Village.
One of the biggest ways Foster Village has supported Kate’s family is through the Moms Support Group that meets every month. These meetings allow her to connect with other foster families going through similar experiences.
“The support group is nice because it helps to feel like you're not alone,” Kate said. “Families who don't foster don't understand what it means to constantly transition kids in and out, the bonds you develop, the struggles with behaviors and unique needs.”
Whether Kate just needs to vent, get advice, or find strength to get through a tough period, the support group is there. “I've had up to eight kids in my home at once,” she says. “It's nice to have that support.”
Foster Village Northeast KS has assisted Kate's family in many other ways – providing Welcome Packs when transitioning kids in and out of the home, hosting Caregiver Nights Out so Kate and her husband can get a break, and even helping to find a new, better-suited placement for children who weren't a fit for their home.
“Foster Village has helped us with so much,” says Kate. “I know they're there if I need it to get my sanity back.”
